HERMOSILLO, Mexico.— The last time 23-year-old Paula Josette spoke with her mother was the same day she would die. In the afternoon of January 14 she called her mother Briseida Arizona over the phone to let her know that she would be going to visit a man inside a state prison in the Mexican northern city of Hermosillo, Sonora. The next day Briseida’s phone rang again. This time was from a local hospital to tell her Paula Josette had died.

It’s still unclear what exactly happened during the few hours she spend inside Cereso #2 or how exactly did she die. On the official documents handed over to her mother and obtained by saga the cause for her death is listed only as a “heart attack”.

“I got a call from the hospital on Monday (January 15) to tell me my daughter had died. They didn’t say anything else,” Arizona told saga.

According to the official investigation Paula Josette entered Cereso #2 in Hermosillo at around 6:00 pm on Jan 14th. The next thing on the official report is that her dead body was left outside the Hospital General by a prison’s van at 10:45pm the same day. The people who dropped her body at the hospital didn’t stay for further investigation. Paula Josette’s purse, cellphone and jacket were also missing.

Someone inside the prison called the emergency services at around 9:00 pm after noticing that Paula Josette had stopped breathing, according to a separate report made by the prison's authorities to the chief of police in Hermosillo and also obtained by saga.

The doctor who received Paula Josette’s body said she had died at least three hours earlier, meaning she was only alive inside prison for less than three hours.
