Washington, D.C.— This could be the first time we hear from the deep ins of the ruthless Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG for its Spanish acronym): the trial against Rubén Oseguera Gonzáles, known as ‘El Menchito’ after his father, CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera ‘El Mencho’, bagan this week in Washington.

The trial will reveal several details -kept in secret until now- of how ‘El Mencho’ operates his organization in and outside of Mexico.

One of the first witnesses to be called is Oscar Nava Valencia, known as ‘El Lobo’ a former leader of the Valencia cartel who got extradited from Mexico to the U.S. in 2009. Nava Valencia is now a cooperating witness against the CJNG.

The next one up will be Elpidio Mojarro Ramírez known as ‘El Pilo’, a shadowy man who wanted to be at the place where ‘El Mencho’ sits today. Instead he will now go all in against ‘El Menchito’ and his father at a federal court.

The trial against ‘El Menchito’ could also reveal the relationship between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and Mexican authorities, which would be a first obstacle to overcome for Mexico’s new president Claudia Sheinbaum.
